Cocaine addiction is a serious problem for many people from all walks of life. Like other addictive substances it does not discriminate between age, race, or gender.
And, most people don’t realize at what point their cocaine use has turned into a cocaine addiction.
What Are the Signs of Cocaine Addiction?
Cocaine addiction symptoms are similar to signs and symptoms of any other drug use or addiction, with perhaps one exception. As cocaine is often snorted, specifics signs of use may include nosebleeds, loss of smell, or a frequent runny nose.
Other signs of cocaine addiction may include:
- Feelings of intense happiness or nausea
- Sensitivity to light, sounds, or touch
- Irritability, anger, paranoia
- Changes in appetite
- Headaches, convulsions,or seizures
- Heat attacks, disease or stroke
- Sexual problems
- Problems thinking ,sleeping, or with short term memory
A loved one who is developing an addiction to cocaine, or any other drug, may begin to behave erratically. They may display severe mood swings, become secretive, or lose interest in previously enjoyed activities.
You may notice your loved one or family member no longer attends to their personal care or hygiene, and they keep erratic hours – perhaps sleeping all day and being active at night.
You may also notice that they seem to have new friends or that they isolate themselves and exhibit paranoid behavior.
Cocaine Side Effects and Symptoms
People become addicted to cocaine and other drugs because of the initial high or buzz that they get from using the drug.
The problem is that continued use makes it harder to get that high. Your body builds up a tolerance and it needs more and more of the substance to produce the pleasurable effects.
A cocaine high will produce feelings of alertness, increased energy levels, and an increased ability to focus or concentrate. It’s also known as coke, blow, rock, snow, and crack. Some people will inject it directly into their veins, rub it onto their gums, or in crystal rock form, heat it up and inhale it.
Cocaine is a highly addictive substance as it works by increasing the dopamine levels in the brain. Overdoses are difficult to treat and may result in permanent heart and lung damage, or even death.
Symptoms of overdose can include:
- Sweating
- Increased body temperature or heart rate
- Chest pain
- Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting
- Seizures and/or tremors
- Heart attack or stroke
- Confusion and paranoia
- Anxiety and panic
- Hallucinations or delirium
Cocaine Withdrawal Symptoms
As we’ve already mentioned, increased use of cocaine leads to higher tolerance levels which in turn, can often result in an overdose. However, many people who decide to stop taking the drug can find themselves unable to cope with the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
Cocaine withdrawal involves physical symptoms, however, we know that the psychological and emotional side of addiction can often be more difficult to manage. This is why Revive uses a holistic approach to addiction treatment, so that we can address any and all problem areas you may be experiencing.
It’s not enough to just treat the symptoms, we need to look at ways to prevent relapse and further your quality of life.
Withdrawal from cocaine and other drugs should be taken under supervision by qualified medical professionals. Withdrawal can be conducted at home but is more commonly undertaken in a residential setting.
Cocaine withdrawal symptoms can include:
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Concentration problems
- Increased appetite
- Cocaine cravings
- Chills, muscle aches, nerve pain
- Sleep disturbances including nightmares
