We realize that to many, this period of time can be a dark and scary experience. Anyone having to embark upon the detox process is likely not in a good place, whether emotionally, physically, spiritually or any combination thereof. Add to that the possibility for lack of knowledge on drug addiction or alcoholism, and it makes this road all the darker.
When people come into need for medical detoxification or any type of drug rehab related service, it is more often than not on a time-critical scenario. A common scenario, for instance, is when the addict or alcohol just suffered an overdose or near-death experience in some capacity, thus forcing the individual into immediate detox or treatment. The most common problem resulting from this type of scenario however, is that it creates a rushed situation and in many cases, the loved ones in charge of lining up the client’s care are unable to make the correct choice of treatment in lieu of inadequate time for due diligence.
In an effort to shed more light and offer immediate information, Revive Detox highlights some of our more frequently asked questions and answers below….
In general, the withdrawal process from daily drug and/or alcohol abuse can take anywhere from several days on up to one to two weeks. There are a number of variations that will greatly impact how long one’s detoxification process will take, but rarely do we see anyone exceeding the 10 to 14 day marks.
It is highly recommended that the patient transition immediately from detox into a residential treatment setting in order to continue on in their recovery process. In fact, studies have shown that relapse among those who return to their normal lives immediately following detox is extraordinarily high, upwards of 80 to 90 percent! Revive actually has a number of inpatient addiction treatment centers within our partner network – both here in Los Angeles as well as elsewhere around the nation – thereby enabling us to best match the patient with a rehab setting that meets their specific needs.
It all depends on the individual as well as the substance of abuse, along with amounts and regularity of use. This is a difficult question to answer without knowing more, but we can say this: While detoxing from opiates, heroin and painkillers (i.e., Vicodin, Oxycodone, Percocet, etc.) can feel downright miserable, beyond belief, it is typically not a life threatening endeavor. However, a cold turkey detox from alcohol or benzodiazepines (i.e., Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, etc.)can definitely pose potentially life threatening scenarios.
